Charleston is such a special place for me. It’s where I moved after College to start a new chapter of my life. It’s where Casey and I had our first date, it’s where we got married. This historic city will always hold a special place in my heart. So it’s a treat to offer you a Charleston Travel Guide in partnership with J.McLaughlin. I’m sharing my favorite hotels, restaurants and things to do while in the city. Luckily, I teamed up with local photographer Anne Rhett to help capture the beauty and charm that Charleston has to offer but you’ll still need to experience it for yourself.
With Christmas near, it’s the perfect time to plan a trip to Charleston to get a head start on your holiday shopping! I love the nostalgia that comes with making a Christmas list, coming up with thoughtful gift ideas for friends and family and then spending the day shopping. Is there a better way to kick off the holiday season?! It especially helps that we’re experiencing cooler weather in the South. So I packed two outfits that both centered around cashmere sweaters from J.McLaughlin.
Where to Wear.
I love the winter white look which is why I paired the off-white stretch knit skirt with a matching off-white cashmere sweater. The ruffle neckline and sleeve provide just the right detail and the cashmere adds the perfect amount of warmth. I opted for the Mila Pumps in leopard for a pop of pattern but you could easily swap them out for the Dillon Loafers in leopard if you prefer flats while walking around the city.
For an evening look, I donned the wide leg pants in ivory (seriously my favorite pair of pants that I own) with a light gray cashmere sweater. Everyone should own these pants because of the super soft fabric and overall style. I slipped on black ankle-strap shoes and stepped out into town!
Where to Stay.
Charleston Place Hotel. One of my favorite hotels located in the heart of the city is the Charleston Place Hotel. It’s a beautiful property filled with shops, restaurants and recently updated rooms. Head to the rooftop for some of the best views in town.
Zero George Street. A charming boutique property, Zero George Street is a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. You’ll be mesmerized by the romantic setting and historic Charleston single homes that make up this quintessential boutique hotel.
Two Meeting Street Inn. Located right on the Battery, Two Meeting Street Inn is one of the oldest B&Bs in Charleston. You’ll fall in love with the architecture, location and the breezy porch overlooking the water.
Where to Eat.
167 Raw. 167 Raw offers the freshest seafood in Charleston which is why you should arrive early to beat the line. I always order the lobster roll but you can’t go wrong with their ceviché or fresh oysters. They also have a great wine menu.
Sugar Bakeshop. Pop into Sugar Bakeshop on Cannon Street for an afternoon pick-me-up. Not only is it the prettiest building in town, but they also make the most delicious cupcakes!
Charleston Grill. This is the restaurant that Casey and I met and had our first date. It’s located in the Charleston Place Hotel and is one of the finest restaurants in Charleston. Don’t leave town without dining at the Charleston Grill. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
Palmetto Café. This light-filled café is an excellent spot for brunch! I love Palmetto Café’s french press coffee, low-country menu and Instagram-worthy decor.
The Ordinary. Another one of my favorite restaurants in town is The Ordinary. You’ll fall in love with this upscale seafood restaurant not only because of the food but also the once 1920’s bank is now known for its tall ceilings, high-energy bar and fresh seafood. I always order their ceviché as a starter.
What To Do.
Shop at J.McLaughlin. This large J.McLaughlin boutique always has the newest arrivals! Located at 212 King Street, it’s always bustling with customers looking for just the right outfit for all occasions.
Be a Chandler for a Day at Candlefish. Stop in Candlefish on Wentworth Street to become a chandler for the day. They offer a variety of workshops so that you and your friends can learn how to make your own candles. It’s such a fun activity and it’s BYOB!
Explore South of Broad. Explore the South of Broad neighborhood either by foot or by bike. This area of town has the prettiest architecture and wrought iron designs.
Grab Wine and Cheese at Goat. Sheep. Cow. Take a break from exploring and sip on a glass of wine while enjoying their artisan cheeses at their North location. Goat. Sheep. Cow. is a perfect spot to relax and recall your most memorable moments in the Holy city so far!
I’m already planning my next trip to Charleston to soak in all of its charm. I hope that you’ll find this travel guide useful for your own travels.
